Many parts of Madhya Pradesh are experiencing bitter cold conditions with Pachmarhi — the famous hill station of Hoshangabad district — recording the lowest temperature at minus 0.4° Celsius early morning on Sunday.
The state Tourism Development Corporation’s ‘Pachmarhi Festival’ is currently underway at the hill station but the extreme weather condition has robbed the festival of its sheen.
Additionally, in Umaria and Dindori districts of the Shahdol division, minimum temperature dipped to 1° Celsius, almost freezing the water at some places. Shahdol division is said to be the worst affected area by the intense cold wave that is settling across the state.
While a minimum temperature of 4.8° Celsius was recorded in Jabalpur district, Bhopal and Indore shivered at 6 and 8° Celsius respectively, E R Chintalu, posted with the Meteorological Centre in Bhopal said.
He said the cold wave will prevail in few places across the state for the next 24 hours or more. “Ground frost may occur at isolated places spread over Gwalior, Datia, Morena, Khajuraho, Tikamgarh, Rewa, Umaria and other places,” he added.
In Gwalior, mercury dropped to 3.6° Celsius on Sunday, making it the coldest day of the season in the district. The intense cold wave condition is likely to persist for some more days in the wake of fresh snowfall in the hilly regions of northern India. So far, the cold condition hasn’t affected the visibility factor which remained normal here. However, people who love to go out in the winter season had the time of their lives as the Gwalior Mela attracted large numbers.

According to officials of MeT office, the northerly wind is pulling in chilly air from northern parts of the country, causing people throughout the state to shiver under considerably low temperatures.
Cold conditions are forcing people to stay indoors with roads becoming deserted early in the night. At many places, bonfires are bein lit along the roadside to beat the cold.
