The workshop mainly focused on the utility of the solar water-heater system. Inaugurating the workshop, Secretary (Energy) ICP Kesari said the common notion in society and industry was that the main sources of conventional energy were hydroelectric and thermal whereas solar energy was considered as non-conventional source.

“But the truth is that solar energy has actually been the source of conventional energy,” he mentioned. Stating that the workshop would prove beneficial in giving a boost to the non-conventional energy sector, Kesari urged bankers to sanction loans to projects related to non-conventional energy.

Senior scientist with the Government of India’s non-conventional energy department Dilip Nigam said to ascertain development of a country, per capita consumption of energy was considered as a parameter.

Citing examples, he said in the USA per capita consumption was 12,000 Kilowatt, whereas in India it was just 500 Kilowatt.“MP ranks fifth in non-conventional energy sector and effort has to be made to improve its position in the country,” he said.

Nigam added that banks provide loan on non-conventional energy projects at two per cent rate of interest. State Bank of India’s chief general manager, S Bhattacharya cited the example of Bank of Maharashtra’s contribution in the sector in Maharashtra and said the SBI would sanction loans to projects related to the sector on priority basis.

The technical session of the workshop dealt with various issues related to the subject.
