The resignation of Mrs Sonia Gandhi from the Lok Sabha was major news in Britain with several television channels and radio networks discussing it and its possible impact on Indian politics.

The resignation was a topic of discussions in most areas like Hounslow, Wembley and Southall in London and cities like Leicester and Birmingham where large segments of Indian families live.

Most felt that the move took the sting out of the opposition and that it would hardly affect the political equation in India. "She is president of the Congress Party and will be as powerful even if not an MP," said an Indian GP.

The President of the Indian Overseas Congress (UK), Balwant Kapoor, who is the only freedom fighter living in the country, told HT that by voluntarily resigning from Parliament and chairmanship of the National Advisory Council, Mrs Gandhi has set new and high standards in public life.

Kapoor called on the BJP leaders who were "levelling baseless allegations against her" to apologise to Mrs Gandhi.
