India averted a major controversy on Sunday when skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni made a spirited gesture to withdraw his team's run-out appeal against Ian Bell.

Bell had been ruled run-out at the stroke of tea when he assumed Eoin Morgan's shot off Ishant Sharma had crossed the fence. Absent-mindedly, he started walking towards the dressing room for the tea break.

Bell did not realise that Praveen Kumar's clumsy attempt at the fine-leg fence had been successful.

Kumar threw the ball back and India appealed for a run-out. The decision was referred to the third umpire and after double-checking with Dhoni, Bell was given out.

During the tea break, England skipper Andrew Strauss and coach Andy Flower asked India to reconsider their decision.

They agreed and took it back. When the Indian team came back to play along with Bell, they were greeted to loud cheers.
