MSEB stops power supply to 15 Ulhasnagar schools

Students of 15 schools in Ulhasnagar have been forced to sit in the dark as the power supply to their schools has been disconnected by the Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) owing to non-payment of bills. Kiran Sonawane reports.

Vijay Sawant, chairman, education board, Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC), said the board had written to the parent body, the UMC, about the pending electricity bills and had asked for funds for the school.

“The mayor and commissioner gave us assurances that they would consider our demands and release the funds, but nothing has been done yet,” Sawant said.

Ramdas Bidve, education officer, Ulhasnagar Education Board, said, “Many schools have not been able to conduct computer classes, owing to which children from three to four nearby schools have been forced to gather at one school.”

“Several schools do not have clean drinking water and the washrooms are also quite dirty,” he added.

In many schools, as there are no sweepers, the teachers and students have been cleaning the classrooms together, Sawant said.
