You may think that your quirky email id is hip and cool, but you would be better off not putting it on your CV, for it seems that nothing turns off potential employers more than a hip moniker.

A new study by Kevin Tamanini, a doctoral candidate in industrial and organisational psychology at Ohio University, found that a quirky e-mail name is rated lower by potential employers and that people who keep it straight and simple are the ones who are more likely to land that job they have been eyeing.

“People want to be creative, but that urge to be creative can be a hindrance if you’re looking for jobs,” Live Science quoted him, as saying.

As a part of his study, Tamanini collected 200 e-mail addresses from various sources, including university professors, 20 of which he showed to each of the 200 college students.

He then asked the volunteers to rate the email addresses on five criteria—success, ethical caring, popular fun, degree of masculinity and degree of professionalism. He noted that ‘professional’ emails received higher ratings of success than quirky ones, which were found to correlate better with ethical caring, popular fun and masculinity.
