The government has already appointed Ranjit Kumar as the solicitor general and six additional solicitor generals.

Rohatgi would take over as the 14th AG of the country. His predecessor GE Vahanvati had resigned the day after the new NDA government took over at the Centre, leading to speculation over the AG’s appointment after the government did not notify it immediately after taking Rohatgi’s consent.

Rohatgi, son of a former Delhi high court judge, was the additional solicitor general during the last NDA tenure under Vajpayee’s regime. He has represented Gujarat government in the Supreme Court in multiple cases.

He also represented Anil Ambani during the gas dispute case between the Ambani brothers in the Supreme Court and contested for the Italian embassy in the case involving the two Italian marines accused of killing fishermen off the coast of Kerala in 2012.
