DAMPENING THE celebrations of BJP president-designate Rajnath Singh, Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav today offered to resign from his post if Rajnath’s association with the mafia was not proved.

“Am I a supporter of criminals and the mafia?”, the visibly perturbed Mulayam asked at a public rally in Varanasi today while mentioning Rajnath’s dharna here since November 30 demanding CBI enquiry into the murder of BJP legislator Krishnanand Rai and blaming him for the increase in crime in the state.

“If a thorough inquiry is initiated against Rajnath Singh and if it is not proved that he is the main supporter, promoter and protector of criminals and mafia, I will resign from chief ministership”, Mulayam declared.

Almost the entire BJP leadership, including former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, outgoing party chief LK Advani, former HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, Pramod Mahajan and even JD (U) leader Sharad Yadav, had joined Rajnath’s 15-day dharna .

Mulayam had said Rajnath’s dharna was at the behest of a dreaded mafiosi which Rajnath outrightly rejected.

As MP-MLA duo have been named in the murder and are lodged in jail, Mulayam came out in support of his MP Afzal Ansari and denounced his brother Mukhtar Ansari, an independent legislator. He said his government would punish the guilty and defended Afzal saying “we are with him” and made it clear that Mukhtar Ansari was never in his party and even lashed out at him for his criminal activities.
