The 1964 musical Funny girl gave her career a turning point and she never looked back. She sold 140 million albums worldwide and ranks 15th on the list of bestselling artistes of all time. Later, she debuted with a film that was based on her own Broadway hit, Funny Girl. The film was not only a commercial success but also got her Academy Award for Best Actress though she shared it with Katharine Hepburn for the movie The Lion in Winter.

Her film journey has been quite musical in the sense that her cinema mostly centers around a musical. Jerry Herman's Hello, Dolly! (1969) and Alan Jay Lerner's and Burton Lane's On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970) were based on musicals while her fourth film was based on the Broadway play The Owl and the Pussycat.

Barbra earned her second Academy Award for Best Original Song as composer of the song Evergreen, from A Star Is Born (1976). This was the first time a woman had received this award.

As if this was not enough, Streisand has also long been an active supporter of the Democratic Party and many of their causes.
