On Wednesday, hundred private taxi drivers took a solemn oath to make manic Mumbai certain decibels lighter by resolving not to honk unless necessary.
The oath jointly taken by 20 female drivers of the ‘For She Ground Travels’ and 80 male drivers of the ‘Fulora Foundation’, at the Mumbai Traffic Police headquarters, was the first initiated attempt to preserve the environment and make the city less noisy, under the traffic police’s ‘No Honking Movement’.
“In the case of compulsive honking we have already had 35000 cases of fining and imprisonment and I am certain that under this oath 90 per cent of these drivers will not unduly blow horns,” said Harish Baijal, deputy commissioner of police.
Sanjay Barve, joint commissioner of police, traffic, presided over the ceremony and made a plea to the volunteering drivers to abandon their habitual honking.
