Incessant rains lashed India's financial capital on Thursday resulting in waterlogging and severe traffic snarls in many of the city's suburbs.
Although the local train service was largely unaffected, many parts of the city, especially the western suburbs of Andheri and Santa Cruz as well as Dahisar in the north reported traffic snarls.
Many people left their workplaces early to reach their homes to avoid getting stranded in a possible chaos.
"I would rather leave early than get stuck in office for more than 36 hours. South Mumbai may look all right, but the more northwards you move, the worse the situation gets," said Abhinav Pandey, an advertising professional.
An unexpected heavy bout of rainfall on July 26-27 had led to a complete breakdown of the city's civic machinery confining thousands of Mumbaikars to their workplaces or railway stations, bus stops and other public places for more than 36 hours.
However, the situation was not that bad and the Meteorological Department recorded 22.8 mm of rainfall at Colaba in the first three hours on Thursday morning as against 27.9 mm on Wednesday.
The Santa Cruz observatory recorded 37.8 mm rainfall as against 82 mm in the past 24 hours.
