A 24-year-old from Indore, who got his colleague to Mumbai on the pretext of a job at an event management firm and allegedly tried to trade her for Rs 3 lakh, was recently arrested from south Mumbai.
While the accused, Azam Khan, worked in the housekeeping department of a mall in Indore, the 19-year-old woman worked in the cosmetics department. They have known each other for two months, said officials of the social service branch (SSB) of the Mumbai police. The woman’s father is a carpenter.
“Khan promised the woman, a Class 12 passout, a lucrative job in Mumbai. However, after they came to the city, he tried to sell her. He was caught by a team of SSB officials near Girgaum chowpatty,” said Pravinkumar Patil, deputy commissioner of police, enforcement.
On receiving a tip-off, the police officials sent a decoy, and found out the woman wasn’t aware of the deal. “The woman was shown to the decoy from a distance. Around 11pm, Khan was to get the money, after which he would have handed over the girl,” said Patil.
A team comprising inspector Raje Bidkar, R Ranmale and Vilas Datir arrested the accused near a restaurant on the Dr Purandare Marg, when the money was being paid. The officials said the woman was shocked when she got to know about Khan’s plans and fainted. She has now been sent to a women’s shelter and the authorities are coaxing her to share more details. Khan was handed over to the Gamdevi police station, under whose jurisdiction the incident took place.
A case under section 370 (1) (exploitation of trafficked person) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act have been registered. The accused has been remanded in police custody.
