Better emergency and trauma care soon may be a possibility in the city.
A four-member team of trauma care specialists from the United States of America visited the city to train doctors from both public and private hospitals across the state to handle emergency and trauma cases.
The team headed by Dr Navin Shah, a urologist practicing in the US, succeeded in getting an approval from the government of Maharashtra to develop and establish an Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Trauma Centre (TC) modelled on centres in America.
It took eight years to secure this permission.
Shah said, “Emergency care is a right every citizen should have.
I was very keen on sharing my learning and experience with India in every possible way.
Hence, I came up with a plan to make hospitals capable of handling a medical emergency effectively.
The main purpose of this venture is to ensure that all hospitals are equipped to provide emergency medical care to patients irrespective of their economic background.”
The two-day workshop on ‘Trauma Care- A US experience’ was held from June 18 to June 19 at Sir JJ Hospital, Byculla. Around 70 surgeons from all over the state took part in the programme.
