"The havan was organised for peace and prosperity of all citizens," the BJP Chief Minister, who performed the puja along with his wife, told reporters after the puja.

Asked whether it had anything to do with the BJP's poll prospects, Munda evaded a direct reply saying "the BJP-led government should come back to power under Atal Bihari Vajpayee's leadership".

A ten-member team, led by M Venkatasan and comprising priests from Chennai, Kanchipuram and Tirupati, performed "Sudarshan, Mritinjay, Dhanvantri and Ganapati havens" for four hours at the chief minister's official residence.

Venkatasan said the same priests had performed puja at Jayalalitha's house a fortnight ago.

Most of the Puja materials had been brought from Chennai, another priest said.
