Concerned over the skewed sex ratio in the country, leading Muslim clerics and intellectuals today said change in the mentality of the society can only solve the problem and not "speeches and sermons".
Speaking at a seminar on 'Female foeticide and dowry system', All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) chairman Maulana Rabe Hasan Nadwi expressed serious concern over the adverse sex ratio in the country and said there was an urgent need to "change the mentality of the society".
"The problem can not be resolved through speeches and sermons...Concrete steps will be required to address it," he said.
Addressing the seminar, noted Islamic scholar Maulana Khalid Ghazipuri Nadwi said "female foeticide is a blot on the modern civilisation".
Former Lucknow University vice-chancellor Roop Rekha Verma cited various reports in this regard and said there was a need to create more awareness among the people to get rid of the problem.
