The faithful turned up in large numbers in mosques and specially set up 'Idgahs' across the state for Eid namaz led by religious heads.

The celebrations had begun since last evening after confirmation was received on the beginning of the month of Shawwal after 30 days of fasting, penance and charity.

Imam Hamsa Moulavi Farooqi led the 'perunal namaskaram' (Id namaz) at the famous Palayam mosque in the heart of the city in Thiruvananthapuram.

In many places, Muslim charity and cultural outfits organised distribution of food packets and garments to the poor and the needy as part of the celebrations.

Political leaders and community elders in their Eid greetings urged the people to uphold the cherished ideals of love, compassion, brotherhood and social harmony.
