The 65-Year-old ties of the Birla family with the Queen of the Hills Mussoorie were strengthened on Thursday with the naming of a road after late Manorama Devi Birla, wife of late K.K. Birla, chairman of the Hindustan Times Group.
The road leading from the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration to the Polo Ground was named after Manorama Devi Birla by Uttarakhand Chief Minister B.C. Khanduri.
Speaking on the occasion, Khanduri said, “I have worked with the late K.K. Birla in the Parliament and he was a gem of a person. The naming of the road after Mrs Birla is a tribute from the people of Mussoorie to her.”
Those present on the occasion included Manorama Devi’s daughters — Nandini Nopany, Jyotsna Poddar and Sobhana Bhartia, Union Minister of State Jyotiraditya Scindia and several dignitaries from Dehradun and Mussoorie.
Chairperson of HT Media Limited and member of Rajya Sabha Shobhana Bhartia said she was grateful to the people of Mussoorie for the affection they had given to them over the years. “My family has been associated with Mussoorie for the past sixty years. My mother never let go Mussoorie out of her mind even when she would be in Kolkata. She used to come here and spend 5-6 months every year,” she said.
She said that her family would always be associated with Mussoorie as it was a place close to their hearts.
