The Uttar Pradesh government is likely to extend the tenure of the one-man inquiry commission set up to probe the Muzaffarnagar riots, as it is yet to submit its report.

As its two-month deadline ends on Monday, the Justice (retd) Vishnu Sahai Commission has sought more time to complete its inquiry and the process in this regard is already on, official sources said.

The commission has received more than 350 written statements, and has visited Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat and Meerut and Saharanpur districts affected by the communal violence in September, which left more than 60 people dead.
