Ramvilas Vedanti, senior member of the Ramjanmabhoomi Trust, on Sunday backtracked from his statement on rewarding the one who beheads Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. With the Sangh Parivar distancing itself from his intemperate language, the Ayodhya mahant said his comments had been “twisted”.

“The mahants of Ayodhya have not issued any fatwa against Karunanidhi,” Vedanti told mediapersons. However, he said the Hindu community as well as the Sadhu Samaj of Ayodhya were deeply hurt by the CM’s remark that Lord Rama was a “drunkard”.

Vedanti said that he had simply said that the religious scriptures sanctioned the death penalty for those who spoke against Hindu deities.

Vedanti said the comments against the Ram Setu could be tolerated but the attack on Lord Ram could not be sidetracked. “Karunanidhi should apologize for his comments.” He also attacked the UPA government and blamed Congress president Sonia Gandhi for encouraging anti-Hindu leaders.

An agitated Vedanti had told the Hindustan Times over phone on Saturday that “jo Karunanidhi ka sar kaat kar layega, usko sone se taula jayega (the one who brings the head of Karunanidhi will be weighed in gold).”
