"I have no fear that our government is going to fall," the Prime Minister told a news conference in New Delhi. "It will complete its five year term. I have no doubts about that."

Manmohan Singh also denied that he was worried by the criticism of the Left, which props his multi-party government with outside legislative support.

"I don't think the time has come to go back to the people. We want to and we will complete five years," he said.

He said in any democracy some pressures did perform a useful function. "I look at the controversies as part of a process of introspection. I don't take such a pessimistic (view of the Left criticism)."

He said he did not think the Left would withdraw support to the government "in the long run".
