A stronghold of Congress since 1952, Mysore Parliamentary constituency is one of the most prestigious ones in the southern battle of ballot.

Congress has emerged in most of the elections from here but the party faces a tough challenge from a rejuvenated BJP-TDP cadres.

The constituency was represented by two members until the Chamarajnagar (reserved) parliamentary constituency was formed. Chamarajnagar was in the undivided Mysore district before the formation of new districts by the Janata Dal government led by JH Patel.

MS Gurupadaswamy from Praja Socialist Party and B Rachaiah from Congress had won the first LS election in 1952. HD Tulsidas Dasappa of Congress represented the constituency three times from 1967 to 1977.

Scion of erstwhile Mysore royal family and member of dissolved Lok Sabha Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar won the elections on a Congress ticket four times. Wodeyar, who was in BJP for a short period, lost the election in 1991 to Chandraprabha Urs of Congress.

BJP Rajya Sabha MP M Rajashekara Murthy had won the election on a Congress ticket in 1980. BJP’s CH Vijayashankar represented the seat for a short period in 1998. The seat was captured by Congress when Wodeyar won the election 1998. By and large, the constituency has been the forte of Congress.

The constituency has an estimated 13.5 lakh voters. Vokkaligas, Veerashaivas, Kurubas and Nayakas are the dominant communities in the constituency. They have traditionally influenced the poll outcome.

Following are the elected representatives from the seven assembly constituencies of the constituency.

Krishnaraja: A Ramdas of BJP, Narasimharaja: Tanveer Sait of Congress, Chamaraja: H S Shankaralinge Gowda of BJP, Chamundeshwari: A S Guruswamy of Congress, Hunsur: V Papanna of BJP, H D Kote: M Shivanna of Congress, Periyapatna: H C Basavaraju of BJP, K R Nagar: H Vishwanath of Congress. Mr V Papanna and Mr H C Basavaraju, who won the previous assembly elections on BJP tickets, are now identified with the Congress.
