Zabo
This system of water harvesting is practiced in Kikruma village (a model village) in Nagaland. It is a combination of forestry, agriculture and animal care and is specifically meant for irrigation and cattle care purposes.
Diversions are made from the catchment area of a source (generally a stream) which are then diverted towards the terraced farm lands. At specific intersections on the terraces, tanks are made to store this water. A small cut here further diverts the water to the lower terraces where several such tanks are made.
This combination of diversions and tanks ensures that water is evenly distributed throughout the terraced farms in the village. The tank runoff serve the drinking and washing needs of the cattle which in turn serves as rich manure for fields below.
Among these tanks are silt retention tanks meant to collect silt from the storage tanks.
