Presenting a new formula for solving the Tungabhadra river water dispute, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu urged his Karnataka counterpart to share the river-water on pro rata basis.

Naidu told reporters after attending a Janmabhoomi programme in a village here, that the issue was duly discussed during a cabinet meeting in Hyderabad this morning.

Blaming it on Karnataka for keeping the problem brewing, the Chief Minister said as per the recommendations by Bachhawat commission, the water-share of Karnataka was merely 1.2 TMC out of the total availability of 17.10 TMC in the river.

However, the State was using river-water more than five times of its entitlement in gross violation of norms leaving the farmers of the three districts Cuddapah, Mahboob Nagar and Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh sans water.

In fact it was the bone of contention between the two States, he said.
