Addressing a press meet, party leader M Venkaiah Naidu also asked the Election Commission to take "strong action" against Arjun Singh as his statement was in "clear violation" of the model code.

"If action is not taken against Singh, the model code of conduct will become a mockery," Naidu said, adding Singh's statement was a "cheap political gimmick", aimed at gaining political mileage in the states going to polls.

"BJP neither opposes the statement or welcomes it. The issue is very sensitive and a thorough debate is needed."

On the UPA government's functioning, Naidu said differences within the UPA was increasing day by day and the BJP expected a mid-term polls to Parliament after the elections in five states.

"The UPA has become an Ulta Pulta Alliance," said Naidu, who was in the state for campaigning for the BJP candidates. "There is no central figure in the UPA government who can command respect and lead the government."
