The Nalanda police had come very close to busting the nation-wide racket involved in leakage of papers of competitive examinations with the arrest of seven persons, including Harishankar Chaudhury, a close associate of the racket's kingpin Dr Ranjit Singh in connection with the leakage of SBI probationary officers recruitment test last year.

The Nalanda police had arrested Chaudhury and six others from a hotel in Biharsharif, three of them were caught mugging up the answer of the leaked questions in a closed room on July 21, 2002, superintendent of police Amit Lodha said on Thursday.

An FIR had been lodged with Laheri police station in this connection.

During interrogation, Chaudhary, a native of Begusarai who was arrested along with Ranjit while leaking CAT papers, had revealed that they had planned to realise Rs five lakh from each aspirant after they had cleared the test, he said.

Chaudhary had confessed that he had procured the question papers from an employee of a printing press in Mumbai.

The Nalanda police later contacted their counterparts in Mumbai to get details of the Mumbai-based printing press employee but the latter failed to respond, Lodha said.

Had the Mumbai police acted promptly and the employee of a Mumbai-based printing press was arrested, the racket could have been busted last year itself, Lodha added.
