The 24-year-old Nalbandian, ranked third in the world, will fly back to his homeland directly after the ATP Rome Masters and will now miss the 2.45 million dollar (1.9 million euro) Hamburg Masters which begin on Monday.

Australia's Lleyton Hewitt, ranked 11 in the world standings, has also been forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a calf injury.

Hewitt does not want to risk aggravating the injury ahead of the French Open on May 29.
