Panja, the Trinamool Congress candidate in the Kolkata North East constituency, is facing Congress' actor Moushumi Chatterjee, the Marxist candidate Mohammed Salim and -- Ajit Panja the independent candidate!

For the Trinamool's Panja, who is trying to retain the seat, the namesake's nuisance value could prove to be tricky.

The Trinamool camp, which sees a conspiracy behind the fielding of the independent candidate bearing the name of its nominee, is worried that some not very educated voters of the constituency might not make out the difference.

The Election Commission is trying to make the distinction as clear as possible.

It is considering putting independent Panja's father's name, Panchkari, next to his name on the electronic voting machine.

But the Trinamool workers fear that in a constituency where every vote counts, just a few mistakes by voters can make a big difference to their candidate's fortunes.

Besides their name, the two Panjas couldn't have been more different.

The namesake has studied only up to Class IV and has declared property worth Rs 15,000, including about Rs 11,000 in gold ornaments -- much less than what the former minister is worth.

Unlike the veteran politician, who is a barrister, he has been to court only once to get his election affidavit signed by an advocate.

The independent Panja is not campaigning, and has never met his more famous namesake.

There are 10 candidates for the Kolkata North East seat, including five independent nominees.

West Bengal will vote on May 10 for its 42 seats in the last phase of the parliamentary poll.
