WATER RELIEF for thirsting residents and what a relief for bursting bladders! We are, of course, referring to the ADB-assisted Narmada project. With any luck the Rs 641.25 crore scheme will not only wash off the taint of water scarcity from Indore, but also the ammonia odour of urine from streets by the time it is complete in 2009.
Five hundred and sixty-four public utilities, comprising 10-16 toilets and around 8 to 16 washrooms apiece, will be constructed under the sanitation and community infrastructure component of Narmada phase-III. The facilities will, hopefully, dissuade residents from relieving themselves in the open, thereby providing much needed succour to the City’s long-suffering olfactory senses.
While 414 utilities would be constructed in 13 slum areas of the City and MY Hospital at a cost of Rs 224.25 lakh, another 150 facilities are to be built at six localities under the community infrastructure scheme at the cost of Rs 75 lakh.
In the first phase, 23 public utilities will be constructed at a cost of Rs 183.30 lakh in zone Nos. 7-12. The Project Implementation Unit for Narmada phase-III will invite e-Tenders for these as well as four other packages amounting to a total of Rs 96.8 crore, next week.

{{/usCountry}}Gandhi Gram, Ghanshyam Dass Nagar, Shiv Nagar, Shivaji Market Gandi Basti, Sirpur Kaakad and Vyas Nagar would be provided with 150 public utilities under the community area infrastructure scheme. This would be in addition to 189 PSPs (community taps) and electrification of 144 roads to be carried out at the cost of Rs 11.34 lakh and Rs 13.53 lakh respectively.
A sum of Rs 224.25 lakh would be spent on construction of the washroom and toilet facilities at the 13 slum areas.
