Noted lyricist Javed Akhtar has been awarded the Indira Gandhi National Integration prize for the year 2005.

The award, which consists of a citation and a cash amount of Rs 1.51 lakh, will be presented to Akhtar on October 31, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's death anniversary by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

Former recipients of this award include eminent personalities like Aruna Asaf Ali, PN Haksar, Shyam Benegal and Mahashweta Devi.
The award was instituted by Indian National Congress in its centenary year to give recognition to outstanding contributions to the cause of national integration by individuals and institutions.
