Talking to Hindustan Times, coordinator of the seminar Dr Sudhir K Jain said it was for the first time that the was organising a national seminar to discuss aspects of constructing safer buildings.

He said the objective of the seminar was to create awareness among people with regard to construction of buildings resistant to earthquake and blasts by terrorists.

He said in the wake of growing terrorist activities it had become necessary to construct buildings that suffered minimum loss during blasts.

Dr Jain said the seminar would deliberate on how to estimate terrorist threat while taking adequate construction precautions, how buildings could be made resistant to blasts and what kind of electronic and computer-based equipment should be employed in buildings for forewarning against entry of terrorists in its surrounding areas and within.

To a question he said civil engineers at the IIT-K had developed building structures and designs to minimise effects of terrorist attacks on buildings and had prepared a comprehensive document for constructing shock-resistant buildings.

Dr Jain said proceedings of the two-day seminar would be published.

Recommendations would be forwarded to the Union Government to introduce laws for constructing shock-resistant and safe building, he added.
