State Forests Minister Himmat Kothari expressed these views at the one-day workshop on the Kyoto Protocol organised at the RCVP Noronha Administration Academy on the Forestry Day today. Kothari emphasised the need for forest development activities besides forest protection and conservation.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating environment worldwide, the Minister stated all countries were equally concerned about the ill effects of pollution. He added ruthless deforestation activities were creating havoc on the ecological
balance of the earth.

PS Forests Avani Vaish stressed the need for conservation of forests. He added that both developed and developing nations should play effective role in augmenting forest cover on the globe to save the future generations from facing the wrath of nature. He said developed countries should provide financial assistance to developing nations for increasing forest cover there.

PCCF Mohammad Hashim said the Kyoto Protocol had been enforced to save the environment from further degradation. He added several European countries were investing in India for forestation activities.

Two technical sessions were also held during the workshop and several environmentalists and specialists addressed these sessions.

Administration Academy DG Mala Srivastava, MP Minor Forest Produce Federation MD V R Khare, Dr Indu K Murthy from Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore, Dr Vivek Kumar from Tata Energy Research Institute, New Delhi, and several other experts and forest officials attended the workshop.
