For half an hour, the police recorded the statement of Anita, who is currently recuperating in a hospital.

"Certain facts in the statement given by Anita, her husband and the accused seem to be contradictory, said Police Inspector Vilas Bhole.

"I was in a relationship with Chandran. However, I had never promised him marriage," Anita has said in her statement.

The police said doctors at the hospital had reported that Anita's condition was improving. "After regaining consciousness, Anita said she wanted to meet her children. Her husband, who has been visiting the hospital every day, took along their 10-year-old daughter and six-year-old son on Thursday evening," a hospital staffer told Hindustan Times.

A police official said quoting the statement of one of an eyewitness that after the alleged stabbing took place, Chandran himself suggested to Anita's family members, who were at home then, that they should immediately send for an ambulance "as she had lost a lot of blood".

Anita and Chandran got to know each other around three years ago. "Their spouses had no idea of their growing proximity," the police said.
