According to reports, a group of armed left-wing extremists had gone to Istari village under Deori tahsil of Gondia district, bordering Chhattisgarh on Monday evening. They stormed the house of village sarpanch Ghanshyam Koretti (35) and dragged him out of his home. The rebels then thrashed him with lathis and took him away.

No complaint was lodged with the police, but the security personnel had launched a search operation in the region. The senior police officials, including the additional superintendent of police (SP), Vishwas Pansare had visited the village and met the family members of the sarpanch. However, neither the district administration nor the family members have an idea why he was kidnapped or the demands of Maoists.

It was during a search operation that the body of the sarpanch was found on Thursday morning near Sambhu Tola village, the reports said. The naxalites left a pamphlet near the body which blamed Koretti for being a police informer, said Pansare, the additional SP of Gondia.
