Accusing National Human Rights Commission of "turning a blind eye" towards their struggle, NBA leader Medha Patkar on Thursday demanded that the Commission intervene and take up the Narmada issue as a human rights violation case.

"The constitution of NHRC has no meaning if it does not take cognisance of destruction and human rights violation in the name of development," she said staging a sit-in in front of the NHRC office in New Delhi.

Be it removal of slums in Delhi and Mumbai or destruction caused by Sardar Sarovar dam, all come under purview of NHRC, she said adding these were matters of gross human rights violation.

Criticising the decision to constitute a committee by the Prime Minister without consulting them, Patkar alleged the committee has been given work of "post mortem" as it has to complete work of survey between May 19 and June 19 and rehabilitate 35,000 families by June 30.

"It is impossible to rehabilitate a large number of families in 11 days only (between June 19 and June 30)," she said.
