LAUNCHING A joint front with other civil rights groups against the government’s “insensitiveness” on displacement of people to give way to development projects, Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar on Wednesday decided to begin a relay strike on the issue from March 18.
‘Action 2007’ would bring together a diverse cross section of people right from civil rights leaders like Aruna Roy, judicial activists like Kuldeep Nayyar to writers like Arundhati Roy.
On the second day of her demonstration on the Narmada issue at Jantar Mantar here, Patkar announced that a network of different civil rights activists have been roped in to co-ordinate for the agitation.
“It is time to have a joint front to agitate against the government’s insensitiveness on the issue of displacement and hence we have decided to go on a indefinite relay strike from March 18 to force government to rethink its various so-called development projects,” she told reporters here.
Patkar, who has already met Social Justice Minister Meira Kumar on Tuesday demanding rehabilitation of the affected people in Narmada valley, is scheduled to meet Water Resources Minister Saiffuddin Soz tomorrow on the matter.
