Gul, a three-time MLA, was visiting an ailing National Conference worker Mohammad Yousuf Bhat in Chamar Doori locality when militants hurled a grenade towards Bhat's house, officials said.

The grenade, however, exploded in the compound of the adjoining house, they said, adding no casualties were reported.

Gul, who is contesting from Eidgah constituency, was at the house of Bhat, who was not keeping well, to enquire about his health, they said.

This is the first militant attack on any political leaders since the seven stage polls beginning November 17 were announced in the state last month.
