Amid his moves to return to the Congress, NCP Kerala unit President K Muraleedharan has been expelled from the party for "working against organisational interests".
The decision was taken by NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday night, party's national general secretary T P Peethambaran told PTI.
An ad hoc committee headed by Peethambaran has been formed to conduct the party affairs in the state.
The action against Muraleedharan, son of senior Congress leader K Karunakaran, comes a day after his statement that he was mentally prepared to return to Congress, whose state unit he headed before quitting the party five years ago.
On Thursday, Muraleedharan had announced that he was prepared to quit as NCP state president and had recommended to Pawar to dissolve the state committee.
Muraleedharan's keenness to return to the Congress notwithstanding, indications are that it might not be a smooth
affair since most of the state leaders have voiced strong reservations over taking him back.
According to them, he was suspended from Congress for six years after he broke ranks along with his father. However, Karunakaran returned to the Congress two years ago.
Muraleedharan's opponents said he had contested the last Lok Sabha polls against Congress nominee and it would be
improper to welcome back such a person.
