UTTARANCHAL CHIEF Minister N D Tiwari seems adamant on his decision to quit office as Congress in-charge of the state, Motilal Vora, too, could not persuade him to change his mind.
Vora, who was on a two-day visit to three districts of Uttaranchal, after meeting Tiwari at his residence said that Tiwari was adamant on his decision and would soon leave for Delhi to meet Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.
Denying any uncertainty in the state following the announcement by the Chief Minister, Vora said that everything was ‘going fine’. He further added that he would put the matter in front of the party high command. “It is high command’s discretion to decide under whose leadership the forthcoming election was to be fought,” he said.
Vora refused to comment when asked whether the assembly elections would be held under Tiwari’s leadership. Tiwari, who has been sulking for quiet sometime for allegedly being marginalised in Congress hierarchy, had yesterday quit as chief minister and sent his resignation to Gandhi.
The 81-year-old leader had kept away from the AICC plenary in Hyderabad in January and was also not nominated to the all-powerful Congress Working Committee which was reconstituted ahead of the plenary.
Meanwhile, several senior Congress leaders today threw their hats into the ring even as party’s state unit appeared divided on his continuance in the top post. Hectic lobbying for chief ministership began with names of PCC chief Harish Rawat, Information Minister Indira Hridayesh, Congress leader Satpal Maharaj and Speaker Yashpal Arya doing the round for the top post.
