In a gubernatorial reshuffle on Sunday, President Pratibha Patil appointed new Governors for several states.
Former Uttarakhand chief minister ND Tiwari has been appointed as Andhra Pradesh Governor succeeding Rameshwar Thakur, who was holding charge as Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. Thakur has now been appointed as Karnataka Governor. His transfer comes in the wake of incumbent NDA nominee, TN Chaturvedi, completing his term this month.
The Home Ministry had proposed the reshuffle to fill vacancies due to completion of the term of incumbent governors and resignations.
The reshuffle covered the Raj Bhavan in Rajasthan too where Pratibha had quit her post before standing for the presidential election. Former foreign secretary and Arunachal Pradesh governor Shilendra Kumar Singh has been appointed as Rajasthan Governor, relieving Haryana Governor AR Kidwai of his additional responsibilities in Jaipur.
K Sankaranarayanan, Nagaland Governor, would discharge the functions of Governor of Arunachal Pradesh in addition to his own duties.
Former Delhi Lieutenant Governor BL Joshi, who had moved to Meghalaya a few months ago when the government brought in Tejendra Khanna for a second term, has been moved as Governor of Uttarakhand. Joshi is understood to have sought a transfer.
Sudarshan Agarwal, Uttarakhand Governor, has also been transferred and appointed as Governor of Sikkim. Agarwal served as secretary general of the Rajya Sabha for over a decade through the eighties and was member of the National Human Rights Commission before the gubernatorial appointment came his way in 2003.
