The treasury benches launched a counter-offensive against the Congress on Thursday by moving a privilege motion against Youth Congress leaders for holding demonstrations outside Speaker Sumitra Mahajan’s house and accusing her of partisanship.
A set of 30 NDA MPs also separately wrote to Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari to take action against Congress MPs for not allowing the Upper House to function. With Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and others boycotting Lok Sabha proceedings, Youth Congress leaders had on Wednesday staged a demonstration outside Mahajan’s house.
In the letter, Congress MPs were accused of continuously disrupting the House for over two weeks despite warnings. The NDA MPs said, “We want to raise many important issues of public interest on the floor of the House. But disruption and subsequent adjournment is depriving us of this opportunity.”
Maintaining that conduct of some Congress members was not allowing them to discharge their duty, the NDA lawmakers wrote, “We request you to take action as per rules against such members who are disrupting House proceedings. We are sure you will take necessary steps.”
Earlier, BJP MPs Kirit Somaiya and Arjun Ram Meghwal moved a privilege notice in the Lok Sabha, describing the protest as a “murder of democracy” — seen as a counter to Sonia Gandhi describing the suspension as a “black day for democracy”.
