Speaking at the orientation program organised for the post-graduate students at the Institute here on Monday, Dr Dhande said although the number of engineering colleges in the country has witnessed an unprecedented rise in the past few years and the number of B.Tech students had also gone up, there had been no significant rise in the number of M.Tech and Ph.D students. To keep pace with the global standards the country needed more research scholars, he said.

He warned that if research studies were not undertaken and promoted the day was not far off when the country would become a large colony of substandard engineers. He exhorted M.Tech students to take up research programs seriously for improving the engineering education. He suggested them that besides improving their technical IQ they should also improve their emotional quotient (EQ) which was required to achieve success in life and in profession as well.

About 650 students who included 440 M.Tech and 210 two-year M Sc and Ph.D course students joined the institute today. They also attended the orientation program.

All the new students visited the faculties and the laboratories on the first day in the institute.
