The eastern stand, which can accommodate about 5,000 spectators and offers the cheapest tickets, has been covered with the net from the roof to the ground railing.

The need to cover the popular gallery arose after a Titan Cup one-day match against Australia in 1996 was disrupted for several minutes after some agitated spectators flung missiles on to the ground and did not allow Australians to field.

"The nylon net has been made by Garware and not even small bottles can pass through it now," the official said, adding that the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) did not want a repeat of the 1996 incident.

The KSCA has also added a brand new nylon boundary rope for the Test that began on Thursday, said the official.
