The president's office sent out invitations to VIPs and diplomats giving out the time, but not the name, The Daily Star newspaper said.

Ahmed held daylong parleys with representatives of major parties to arrive at a decision.

Because of the stalemate on who the chief advisor or caretaker would be, triggering two days of violence, there were appeals to the president to resolve the issue.

Ahmed said he would do so under the constitution and in consultation with all parties.

The problem arose after the opposition objected to the nomination of former chief justice KM Hasan, who later opted out.
