The Haji Ali pumping station will be partially functional in two days.
It will help ease flooding in south Mumbai and the adjacent parts of the city.
“Two out of the six pumps have been installed, the work on installing the rest in on and will be completed in a few month. The pumping station will be opened before July 20,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner, R.A. Rajeev.
The pumping station was supposed to be fully functional by May.
The delay was because the BMC’s was dilly-dallying in carrying out an environment impact assessment study.
According to civic body, the Haji Ali project is being constructed at a cost of Rs 58 crore over 4,000 hectares.
The pumps will throw out water into the sea, preventing the storm water drains from overflowing and cause flooding. It will benefit areas such as Nanachowk, Slater Road, Tardeo Road, Worli and part of Peddar Road.
The pumping stations, if and when completed, will house six sets of pumps with a total capacity of 36 cubic metres per second.
The highest tide of the season is predicted in the next week. The city might experience a 5.01-metre high tide at 1.23 pm on July 23.
The tide will be 5.05 metres high at 2.03 pm on July 24.

{{/usCountry}}The BMC took up the task of setting up four pumping stations at key outfalls in 2006 under the Rs 1,200-crore Brimstowad project. Apart from Haji Ali, the other three are at Irla, Cleveland Bunder and Love Grove in Worli.
The four pumping stations will cost about Rs 200 crore.
