The state government has blamed the taxi drivers and the taximen’s union for not collecting the latest tariff cards and continuing to carry the old cards.
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) on Tuesday retaliated against a charge made by the Mumbai Taximen’s Union that tariff cards have yet not been published. “Several drivers do not show or pick up tariff cards from RTOs. But this doesn’t mean that we have not distributed,” said C Sontakke, RTO officer at Mumbai Central.
Sontakke added that he himself looks after the printing of tariff cards.
A few days ago, the union had claimed that they did not receive the new tariff cards. It is a common practice for taxi drivers to refuse to show updated tariff cards or show old ones when asked for a tariff card.
The union said it is not their duty to collect the tariff cards from the RTOs, adding that it has distributed the cards at taxi stands and different places and the drivers should collect them.
“We have distributed the tariff cards and it is the drivers’ duty to pick up,” said A Quadros, general secretary, Mumbai Taximen’s Union.
The RTO has also distributed the tariff cards for Cool Cabs whose price has also increased.
The minimum fare for black-and-white taxis has been raised by Re 1 to Rs 14 and every successive kilometre (1 km equals six changes in the meter) would mean a rise of Rs 9. On an average, if your fare is Rs 100, it will go up by 10 per cent, to Rs 110.
