New university announced for Delhi on government?s ?birthday?

The CMs announcement is in response to a question that no new colleges of general education has come up in the city, reports Amitabh Shukla.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday announced the opening of a new university for general education. She said land would be acquired for the new university in outer Delhi. The university would be named after Dr BR Ambedkar.

Dikshit was addressing a press conference to celebrate what she called the “birthday of the government”. The Dikshit government completed eight years on Thursday.

The chief minister’s announcement was in response to a question that no new colleges of general education had come up in the city, despite she holding the Higher Education Department. A booklet on the achievements of the government was released on the occasion in the presence of Cabinet ministers and top officials. Asked what she thought were the failures of the government in the past eight years, the chief minister said, “implementation of various schemes was not at the pace we would have preferred. The multiplicity of authorities proved to be obstacles at various stages.”

As for achievements, Dikshit claimed that much had been done in the field of education, healthcare, flyover construction, tax collection, roads and related infrastructure. She said the human development indices too showed significant improvement. “We are conscious that despite achieving a lot on all fronts, we need to deliver more to the people of the city,” she said.

On the course of action for the next two years, Dikshit referred to the Commonwealth Games as a challenge.

Asked the biggest achievement of the government, Dikshit replied, “We have been able to relate to the people.”
