Not many may find it a nice idea the way members of a laughter club decided to have fun on the New Year bash here.
While most of the people around the world had a wonderful time heralding New Year at their homes, clubs, discotheques and pubs, a selected few in Amritsar opted to cut a cake at a cremation ground.
Members of Idiot Club in the city got together to hail the New Year by paying respects to the departed souls and the venue happened to be no other place than a cremation ground.
Wearing fearful masks and colourful dresses, young and old tapped their foot to popular Hindi numbers in a secluded area away from the hustle and bustle of the New Year celebrations elsewhere in the city.
Rajinder Rishi, President of the Idiot Club said the main motive of organising such a programme is to free people from the clutches of superstitious beliefs.
"The main motive behind organising such programmes is that we want to tell all those who are actually entangled in superstition like believing in ghosts and spirits etc. that is believed by both the literate and the illiterate, said Rishi.
"We want to make them aware that there is no such thing as this. I have been performing for the past 10 years and we never encountered any such thing. And I would like to ask one question to everybody, how can people who have contributed so much during their 80 or 90 years of life time do something harmful for us after death. I would like to emphasise that there is nothing like this and please free you from such superstition," Rishi added.
"It was a nice way to celebrate, we said goodbye to 2006 and are welcoming the year 2007 with all enthusiasm," added Kuldeep Simon, another member of the Idiot Club.
This exclusive Idiot Club has been celebrating New Year in a similar manner for the past one decade.
