An NGO working for the victims of 2002 post-Godhra riots and families of those killed in police encounters in Gujarat demanded a judicial inquiry in all the encounters that have taken place in the BJP-ruled state in the last seven years.
Addressing mediapersons here, Teesta Setalwad, Secretary of the NGO, Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP), said that after 2002 riots, more than 20 persons, mostly from the minority community, have been killed in "so called encounters" by the Gujarat Police.
Demanding a judicial probe into such "extra judicial killings," she said, "Officers of the Gujarat police, some of them within SIT (probing some encounter cases), are all involved in this concerted illegal action by the state."
"In the interest of natural justice, none of those involved (in the probe) should have anything to do with these or other inquiries ordered by the apex court," she said.
The social activist said mother and wife of Mahendra Jadav, killed in an encounter by Ahmedabad police, and wife of Jaffer Qasim, who died in police custody, have approached the Supreme Court demanding setting up of a judicial commission to inquiry into such killings in the state.
Family members of Jadav and Qasim, who were present at the media meet, alleged that their loved ones were killed by the police without any proof against them.
