Taking suo-motu note of the reports of the fire tragedy in Meerut, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report within two weeks from the Uttar Pradesh Government seeking the number of persons who died in the incident and details thereof.
Observing that the contents of the news item, which reported that nearly 50 people were killed and 110 injured, if true, raised "a serious issue of violation of human rights of the citizens", the Commission has sought the report of the Chief Secretary and DGP of the state on the same, an NHRC release said in Delhi on Wednesday.
The Commission has also asked the state government to give information on whether proper identification of the bodies had been made and if so whether the bodies had been handed over to the relatives of the deceased, it said.
Other information sought by NHRC include number of injured in the incident and details thereof, whether proper medical arrangements have been made for providing medical aid to the injured at the state's cost and whether any amount of relief has been disbursed to the next of the kin of the deceased or the injured persons.
The state government has also been asked to furnish the information on whether all the requirements and necessary procedures were followed before granting license/permission for organising the consumer exhibition and whether any case has been registered with the police relating to the incident, if so, the status of investigation, the release added.
