The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) asked the Maharashtra government on Monday to arrest Pune police commissioner Gulabrao Pol for his alleged laxity in taking action in a rights violation case.
Observing that Pol was “casual” and “mechanical” in his approach to mete out justice to a member of the Scheduled Castes (SC) community, the rights panel asked the Maharashtra chief secretary to produce the police officer before it on January 28, 2014.
One Kishan Namdev Godke in April 2007 had lodged a complaint with the Pune police that his son was abducted and killed.
According to Godke, the police did not take prompt action in the case. He took up the matter with the rights body, which summoned Pol with the dossiers related to the case.
Pol, however, failed to comply with the NHRC order.
“The NHRC has taken a serious view of the casual and mechanical approach adopted by the Pune police commissioner... in a rights violation case.
“The NHRC has asked the Maharashtra chief secretary to arrest and bring the police commissioner before the commission on January 28, 2014, at 3:00p.m,” a press release issued by the rights panel said.
It also directed the chief secretary to release Pol on a bail of Rs 500 along with a surety of the same amount on his undertaking to appear before the commission on January 28.
The NHRC observed that without complete reports, it cannot take a final decision on the matter.
“The case was under the Pune rural police division, which is not under my jurisdiction,” Pol said.
